47. Staying Hydrated And Taking Ice Baths: The Power Of Anchoring In Habits

Charlotte Carter

Something as simple as drinking water, or the more challenging action of taking an ice bath, could be the game-changer in your high-performance journey!

In this episode, I talk about the power of the ice bath and how it brings harmony between the mind and body, regulates the nervous system and provides a sense of achievement. I have a close connection with water and staying hydrated is also a key part of my daily practice as a high performer.

By anchoring in habits like these you can enhance your clarity, vitality and overall health.

Each week, my guests and I will be sharing hacks and habits on how to build self-belief, courage and confidence, to master your mindset and navigate your emotions so that you can reach your human potential in a way that feels light, fun and easeful and helps you become fearless. Let's go. Hello and welcome to another episode of Becoming Fearless. I am fiercely bold today, and this is a solo episode that I want to bring to your ears all around the power of the ice bath, the power that you feel when you have anchored in a habit like that, and the real reason why I celebrate the ice bath and water. So so much. So I hope you are all good today. I hope you are having a fabulous day evening, whatever time of day is for you, as you're listening to this episode, and I want to take you on a journey, first of all, about my relationship with water, before we dive deep into why I do the ice bath and the real reason behind it. So I have enjoyed sports for a lot of my life. As many of you know, and as many of my clients who listen to, they love a bit of the old exercise. It's part of my mission to allow people to be healthier, wealthier and happier, and with exercise it's part of my mission for to allow people to be healthier, wealthier and happier. And with exercise there's more of an incentive for some people to drink lots of water. I definitely, when I'm running, I'll drink a lot and when I come back I'll drink a lot, I will feel my thirst in day-to-day life.

Speaker 1:

Many high performers, high achievers, have been proven there's a self-sabotage thread with something as simple as drinking water. It's a classic situation where you know it's going to help you feel good, you know every single cell of your body is going to benefit, you know you're going to get clarity in your mind. But for whatever reason, there is a limit or a block or like an effort around it. So, first of all, if that is you, please raise your hand. Own it. Always a big part of self-awareness. Oh my goodness, yes, that is me. Because that was me. Yes, that is me. Because that was me. Yes, that is me.

Speaker 1:

I had it ramped up on a massive level when I was doing some high-performance blood tests that's actually what they were called as part of my menopausal journey, and I went there and the lady who was attempting to take the blood, she went no, all of your cells have collapsed, they're all dehydrated. I was like, really, she said yeah, they're all thirsty, every single cell. And it was a massive wake-up call for me, a massive wake-up call. And now I intentionally drink more. I intentionally drink first thing in the morning so that I know I have got some of my quota in. So that's one of my relationships with water in terms of drinking it. Tune in to yourself. Are you abundant in this? Are you like always flowing in this? Is there any pattern of resistance, like there was with me? Um, because on a health benefit, every single cell benefits. On a mindset benefit, your mind gets clearer, you feel more alive, things feel um less cloudy and everything internally is cleansed. It's a fabulous, fabulous purifier. That's what it's for. It washes out, it cleanses and it brings you to a state of vitality. So go and get a glass of water if you're near a tap.

Speaker 1:

Let's talk now. I really want to share with you a little bit of behind the scenes as to why the water has changed how I carry myself and how I talk about high performance. So high performance in the old days, in the old me, should we say the younger me, it was all about being the best at everything, and what that meant was keep striving, keep achieving, keep learning, and sometimes at the sacrifice of rest or restoration rest or restoration. Now we fast forward. Now, to me, being 50 and high performance is about leading your life full of fulfillment, full of love and creating health, wealth and happiness in everything you do, finding the balance between what you need to know intellectually in your head and what you know intuitively in your body or in your energy. So the water. This is why it works for me and this is why I am a massive advocate for it. This is why I will keep carrying on with this practice. This is why it is a habit that lasts a long time because it supports you on multiple levels.

Speaker 1:

So when I first brought out the Becoming Fearless podcast, if you listen to the first episode, I talk about my dry rub. I talk about my fear of getting my self visible, getting this podcast into the ears of the masses, and everything that it took for me to get myself to a place where this was going to come out to you all now, routinely, two episodes a week, we are smashing it. It's in many, many countries, in many, many years, of fabulous, fabulous people and people are reaching out, finding me on search engines and asking to come on the show, which I'm super excited about now. One of the things that allowed me to transition from feeling mega fearful in my head to feeling like I can walk with the fear and keep my momentum and keep my drive was the power of the ice bath. And here is why, if you only ever work on your intellect, you will only ever receive your answers from your intellect.

Speaker 1:

Your mind and your thoughts can be challenged, your beliefs can be changed for certain and they can be totally reversed, amended, 180,. Whatever way you say, you can totally change every single one of your thoughts. That's where I stand by. One thought can change your life wholeheartedly. Your thoughts can also keep you stuck and keep you limited and keep you in a space of protection, in a space of protection from fear, of stress. And this can be subconsciously, this can be totally out of your awareness. You realize or release anything to do with stress and understand that it is a emotion to navigate and something for you to lean into, look at, understand, absorb and move through and create a um healthier lifestyle with less stress. Then that is when you are absolutely winning at life.

Speaker 1:

You can't get to your best potential, your highest potential, just in your head, just in your mind. Your body is here for a reason it houses so much of goodness in particularly your powerful heart and, in particular, your intuition. So your mind has all your thoughts, your intellect, your intellectual knowing, and your body has your intuition and your I like to call it your reality check. Nobody can take away what goes on in your body that you feel. Nobody can say to you you should feel this, you should feel that if you're not feeling it, only you know, and if you're blocking it, then your mind can help you unblock it. That's what hypnosis does, but you can open yourself up to feeling so many things through your body. It's gonna basically amplify your performance in every which way possible, and the power of the ice bath is one of the ways that I do this and this is why it gets you out of your head pretty obvious. The water's freezing. You have to navigate.

Speaker 1:

A fear that goes on in your head where you're catching your breath, an anxiety of sorts where you're understanding that you're okay, you're just going to settle yourself, will guide you to that place where it feels like super amazing. And the reason why it's so good for me, why I'm an advocate for it, is twofold. One, it brings into harmony your mind and your body. Another example of this is breathwork Brings into harmony your mind and your body. There are many, many tools that I use that I can share with you on different episodes, but I want to talk about the ice bath as one of the tools. So one of the things it brings into your mind and your body.

Speaker 1:

The second thing, which I feel for certain is essential, is that it helps to regulate your nervous system. It helps to regulate your fight and flight. Believe me, when you first get in, fight and flight is in quite a bit of action. You can quite easily get out, you can quite easily fear gets in. You can quite easily not get in. You can quite easily go to one of the steps and freeze all of these aspects of your mind and body balance, should we say they all play a part. If you ever watch me go in, sometimes I can go straight in, it's great, and I'm straight down. Sometimes I can honestly fight or flight is in a massive part and that's because it's so closely linked to regulation of your nervous system, which is so closely linked to how you show up in life when you are balanced in your body, in your nervous system, and not running on adrenaline and not running on um fear and not running on fear and not running on anything external that people have said, or pressure, or stress, and actually running in a way that your human is expected to things feel lighter and easier.

Speaker 1:

So I do the ice bath primarily for three reasons One, to regulate my nervous system. Two, to connect my mind and body back into sync in a way that I know that I can physically see and move myself through the steps. And then the third one, which is super powerful for me and it may or may not be for you, but it's a strong sense of achievement, achievement of a personal practice, achievement of a habit, achievement of an accomplishment, achievement of an awareness that some days it's easier than others, everything's different, and an allowing and a permission to accept that, rather than continue to strive for the best. And that achievement provides inner fulfillment like never before. So the combination of those three aspects regulating my nervous system, connecting back with my mind and body and this sense of achievement, this sense of achievement within the practice of going in there, cold water is by far my leading high performance tool that I use at the moment and I wanted to share it with you because, if you are new to the whole nervous system regulation, if you are new to understanding stress and pressure in your body, if you are new to my world, start with a cold shower, start with it for 10 seconds, build up to 30 seconds, do it either in the middle of your shower or at the end, notice how you feel, notice your reactions, try to do it for 30 days, see what comes up, see how you move through the freeze, fawn, fight or flight stages and how you can allow and embrace your power to achieve five seconds, 10 seconds, 20 seconds, whatever it may be. We're not about extending time. This is about you creating the personal practice that works, that regulates your nervous system and gets you feeling on fire, alive and grounded like nothing else.

Speaker 1:

Let me know if this episode has resonated. Let me know if you want to know more. I can do a deeper literally a deeper dive on the ice bath. I could talk about it for hours, but for now this was just an intro. Take care, look after yourself, regulate your nervous system, have fun, laugh more, move more and celebrate yourself and your achievements. Take care, I'll see you on the next episode.
